Questions About alt.society.nottingham

Why is a Nottingham newsgroup in the "alt" heirachy instead of the "uk" one?
Good question. A lot of newsservers outside the UK do not carry uk.* groups and it would thus be impossible to access a uk.local.nottingham group from them, so you couldn't stay in touch with what is happening in Nottingham from abroad.

What is the group for?
As described in the charter, "the newsgroup is designed to be used for posting of current events in Nottingham and discussion about life in Nottingham, the city's History (including Robin Hood, etc), society and culture. We also expect natives of Nottingham to use it as a general discussion forum and a way of keeping in touch."

What sort of stuff should I post?
Anything which specifically regards Nottingham is appropriate for posting to the group as is anything which affects the life of Nottinghammers.

What about Tollerton?
Other places in Nottinghamshire like Tollerton, Long Eaton, etc are also covered by this group. We would have called the group alt.society.nottinghamshire, but Nottinghamshire is 15 letters long and some newsservers only accept up to 14 characters per segment of name.

Can I post stuff about Nottingham Forest?
Yes. There is currently a newsgroup called alt.sports.nottingham-forest, but if this unavailable to you or you'd prefer not to use it, alt.society.nottingham is also an appropriate place to discuss the team.

What sort of stuff shouldn't I post?
Advertisements for non-Nottingham-related websites or products are not appropriate for the group. Binary files MUST NOT be posted.

What is a binary?
A non-text posting - a picture, application, sound file or other data file. If you want to post a picture or sound relevent to this group, find an appropriate group in the alt.binaries.* heirachy and post it there and then post a short message to alt.society.nottingham informing us.

Who created the group?
Adam Seeley and I (Toby Inkster).
