Access Log Information

I collect and log HTTP messages sent betweeen your browser and my web server. Such access logging is a common feature of almost all web servers. I record this information to help diagnose any faults on the site, see which parts of it are the most popular and for other research that will help me improve and maintain the site.

Cookies are a technology which can be used to provide you with tailored information from a Web site. You can set your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, giving you the chance to decide whether to accept it.

If you choose to customise this site's style, the site will set an HTTP cookie for the purpose of customisation. The data is non-identifiable — there is no reasonable way for me to identify an individual person from this data.

Content Filtering Policy

There isn't anything too offensive here, so I've labelled my site using ICRA.

This is a scheme aimed at stopping children from accessing inappropriate web sites. If you are a webmaster, label your site with ICRA too!

Site Compatibility

Although it should work in any browser, some less capable browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer may have trouble displaying some of this site's more advanced features (such as -based navigation and semi-opaque images). In order to experience this site at its fullest, I recommend using Opera 7, Netscape 7, Mozilla 1.1 or better.

Accessibility Statement

I have used various special features of XHTML to make this web site more accessible to the disabled and others with special requirements.

• The website uses valid XHTML so will work in your browser.
• All images and most tables have sensible alternate text.
• This site is red/green-colour-blindness friendly.
• Access keys can be used for quick navigation:
  • Modifier+0 — accesskey help.
  • Modifier+1 — home page.
  • Modifier+2 — news.
  • Modifier+3 — site map.
  • Modifier+4 — search.
  • Modifier+9 — feedback form.
  (The modifier is usually Alt, but is Ctrl on most Apple Macintosh browsers and Shift+Esc in Opera.)
  These accesskeys are based on the standard UK government accesskeys.
• There are elements for easy navigation. These can be accessed using any of the following browsers: Lynx, Links, Mozilla (not version 1.0 — but works in 0.9.4-0.9.9 and 1.1+), iCab or Opera
• On the rare occasions JavaScript is used, good alternative mechanisms for accessing content are provided
• Font sizes are specified in non-pixel-perfect ways, so that you can scale the fonts in your browser.
• The XHTML is written to be semantically correct. For example, lists are marked up with list elements instead of image elements for bullet points; abbreviations are marked as such; headings use proper heading markup rather than just setting the font to bold and changing the font size; etc.

This website complies with the W3C WAI WCAG Double-A standards. It also goes part-way to achieving Triple-A standards, but is not quite there yet.

Internet Standards Support

Unlike some so-called web designers, I feel that just testing my site to make sure it works in one browser isn't enough — I need to make sure that anyone using any browser can read the site. That's why I try to ensure that every page conforms to W3C and other standards.

Obviously with a large site such as this, there may be some errors hidden away. Please let me know of any you find and I shall repair them as soon as possible.

XHTML 1.1

Pages are written in 100% valid XHTML 1.1. (As an aside, most pages are also valid XHTML 1.0 Basic after a change of DOCTYPE).

CSS 2.0

This site uses valid CSS 2.0 to provide font, colour and other style hints.

Dublin Core 1.1 / RFC 2731

Dublic Core is a standard for specifying metadata (data about data — e.g. keywords, summary, etc). RFC 2731 is a standard for applying Dublic Core to HTML and XHTML documents.

ISO 8601:1998 (E)

Defines several different methods of representing dates, to avoid confusing MM/DD/YYYY clashes with DD/MM/YYYY. In particular, this site uses the subset of the standard specified in this W3C note.

RFC 3066

A standard for representing languages — e.g. English is "en".

RFC 3236

A recommendation specifying that XHTML should be sent with the application/xhtml+xml MIME type (the MIME standard itself is defined across 2045, 2046, 2047, 2048 and 2049). This builds upon the earlier RFC 3023 that specifies a standard for XML-based media types.

P3Pv1

A standard for representing a privacy policy in XML.

Unicode / UTF-8

A standard for encoding special characters so that they can be read in any program on any platform.

Server Technology

This site is powered by PHP 4.3.1 running on the Apache 2.0.47 webserver running on Mandrake Linux 9.2. It uses PostgreSQL 7.3 as the backend database.
